The Angel, London

AHMM has given an ailing 1980s hulk a new lease of life in Angel, north London, in a speculative development for Derwent.

As this video shows, the architect has deftly inserted a new concrete frame into the building’s former courtyard and extended the building line on two sides out into the street, picking up the curve of adjacent blocks – and expanding the lettable floor area by almost 30%.

The building sports a surprisingly subdued palette of exposed concrete and black-framed curtain wall glazing, for a practice known for its orange and lime colour combos, this time taking its cue more from Mies than chewy sweets.
